GENERAL INFORMATION

The English and Literature Department has always provided a good level of education for students at both undergraduate and graduate levels since its foundation in 1958. The department located in the Arts building on the university campus consists of two sub-sections,which are Linguistics and English Culture and Literature with twenty full time members of teaching staff each experienced and specialised in a particular field of English Language or Literature.

There has been running a dual programme in the department since 1996 almost with similar number of students. The first part takes place between 08-17 hours, and the second one between 17-22 hours. The education in the department is four years for those students who are able to pass the English Proficiency Exam at the very beginning of their acceptance to the department, and five years for those who cannot as they are bound to attend the Preparatory Class for one more year. The average number of students of each year in the department is between 40 and 60.

The courses vary from the language-based ones such as English Grammar, Introduction to Linguistics and Writing particularly in the early years to cultural, literary and critical ones in the following years. Students are also offered some courses concerning American Culture and Literature. The main purpose of these courses in the department is to equip the students with a good level of English Language first and make them practise as they are mostly supposed to be teachers of English after graduation. Secondly, they are taught British and partly American cultural, literary and critical classes or topics so that they could easily understand the West in any sense and compare it with themselves, and they could also have a good basis for further education in the same field.

Subsequent to their graduation from the department our graduates have various job opportunities in both public and private sectors. In other words, they could work at schools as teachers, at universities and institutions as researchers and academics, and receptionists at hotels, tourist guides or travel agent in touristic centres, etc.
